H. B. Ames letter, 1894 September 4.

A letter written by H. B. Ames to James I. Coffey (Coffy) requesting information on the Indian names of lakes and rivers in northeast and north central Minnesota with Coffey's pencilled in responses. A note on the back of the letter says "Chippewa Geographic Names". The information from Coffey was to be given to N. H. Winchell, state geologist of Minnesota.

Newton Horace Winchell came to Minnesota in 1872 when the Legislature offered him $1,000 to complete the first geological survey of the state. He was the first person to map Minnesota's geology and mineral deposits; he discovered the valuable low-grade iron ore deposits of the Mesabi and Vermilion ranges.
